There is a comic strip floating around Facebook that pops up from time to time. Every time I see it, I immediately click the "like" button. It shows a patient sitting in his doctor's office complaining of an unknown ailment. Contradicting a traditional diagnosis, the
physician responds not by prescribing a never-ending cycle of pills, but rather a daily dose of meditation, exercise, eating organic foods and so on. I applaud this type of healing, considering the bulk of our ailments come from our food, lack of exercise, addiction to a plethora medications and a general disconnection with our Spirit. Consequently, when I saw the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, a film dedicated to the physical and emotional healing through food, I thought it important to share it here.

This movie follows the journey of Joe Cross. This successful Australian entrepreneur who not only does business in the United States, he has a hankering for all of our junk food once he arrives here. Joe doesn't simply want a slice of pizza, he would prefer to devour two entire pizzas! Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Don't get me wrong, his body can't hide the fact, that his unhealthy habits are a part of his daily routine, whether he is abroad or while he is at home.
Not only is he overweight, but he has health issues, including a nine year battle with chronic urticaria, a rare disease that manifests continuous cycles of rashes and blisters all over the largest organ in his body—his skin. After trying everything from traditional allopathic medicine to several types of energetic healing modalities, he is still miserable. Nothing has helped him.
We are then shown pictures of Joe from his youth. He went from being an athletic and fit kid, to an obese and sick adult. At some point, Joe finally has enough. He makes it his mission to heal himself through his food intake and with a daily dose of exercise. Needless to say, the results are nothing short of miraculous.

He begins this new chapter in his life by setting out once again for America. This time, however, things will be different. He packs up a juicer and brings a film crew along for the ride to record his sixty-day juice fast. While on his trek across the States, he not only shares his story with anyone who will listen, he also creates juices for others to try, all from the back of his SUV.
What is extraordinary about this film is that one starts out thinking it is just about the protagonist, Joe, but as he moves along his path towards healthy living, he inspires others to begin their own journeys and those people pay it forward by inspiring more people to promote inner wellness. For example, one woman who responded to Joe's call to action no longer has an issue with migraines because of her diet. Hoorah!
...and then there is Phil Staples. I don't want to spoil his story here, but I will write that his part in the film had such a profound impact on me. There is little doubt that he should be a mascot for physical, emotional and mental transformation.
This movie isn't just for those with a weight issue. It is for anyone who has any sort of health problem that they would like to resolve.
Let's face it, we are animals, just like any other animal in this fine world. It is important for us to live in harmony and balance with Nature's way of doing things. When we exploit our bodies, we not only gain weight, we gain illness of all kinds: from colds, to rashes, to mental issues, to cancer. On the other hand, when we honor the temple of our body, by ingesting organic foods that are filled with nutrients Mother Earth gave to them, we will not only be healthy, but happy and filled with more energy than when we eat processed, fatty, sugar-filled, genetically modified and pest- & herbicide doused foods.
There is a reason why this documentary won several awards. This charming and tissue needing film is definitely a must see!
