Red, raw and cracked, I could not only see the reflection staring back at me in the mirror, I could feel the itching and burning before I even got out of bed. Ouch! I figured it was due to the cold<br />
<a name='more'></a>weather. So, I did what anyone would do. I put creams, and lotions on them to try to hydrate them. They didn't work. I next tried antiseptics, hydrocortozone, and ointments. No change. Nyet. Nada. Nunca. After awhile, I just covered the corners with my face powder. It helped to take the sting away. It even helped, to some degree, to hide the blemishes (for about any hour anyway). Eventually, the powdered covered cracks began to look cake-y. So, I would put more powder on them, only for the process to begin again an hour later. Clearly this wasn't the answer. Winter turned into spring, which turned into summer and the cracks were still there! I was at my wits end. Was I going to have to live for the rest of my life with this cracked mouth syndrom?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqYJWs7KzpJmkTW0J1-pEQjcjr1usoU2UdKTiMUuCSFZMylOeU9RiLaYff5sEp4ZZpUJ_v7CELtkTIQKbmlAdLozNdniepMDNFHkAxIIQKc0LYuIpP_P5rvVbtj-BYlJnF-MU69Uc0cV0/s1600/woman+covering+mouth.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqYJWs7KzpJmkTW0J1-pEQjcjr1usoU2UdKTiMUuCSFZMylOeU9RiLaYff5sEp4ZZpUJ_v7CELtkTIQKbmlAdLozNdniepMDNFHkAxIIQKc0LYuIpP_P5rvVbtj-BYlJnF-MU69Uc0cV0/s400/woman+covering+mouth.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
That's when I found the answer.<br />
<br />
I had an appointment with an accupuncturist who was trained in Chinese Medicine. When I explained my issue, she told me this was a common condition with women in perimenopause and menopause. She said that I needed vitamin B.<br />
<br />
Vitamin B to the rescue!<br />
<br />
The only problem was that I didn't know which Vitamin B to get. So, I bought B-Complex. It worked. However, I had to take 4 pills a day—every single day—in order for it to work. And there was one other drawback. I started getting hot flashes. I don't mean a few hot flashes. I mean every few minutes, my body moved from being arctic cold, to needing to strip off my clothes because my body felt like a conflagration was full steam ahead inside my body—and this went on all day long!<br />
<br />
More investigation was required.<br />
<br />
It turns out that some Vitamin B's actually <i>cause </i>hot flashes. Niacin is one of the main culprits, but apparently niacinamide works to relieve hot flashes. I have as of yet to try them, so I do not have first hand experience with that. At this point, I am just concerned about those cracks in my mouth.<br />
<br />
Angular Cheilitis is what the medical profession calls this phenomenon. According to WebMD, it "can be caused by infection, a diet too low in vitamins, and over-closure of the mouth in someone who has been without teeth or dentures for some time." All I knew is that my hormones being out of whack was the cause for mine and I needed to figure out which Vitamin B I needed to make this issue go away.<br />
<br />
That's when I discovered Riboflavin, which is another name for Vitamin B2. Here is what I can say about Riboflavin. It's my hero! 400 milligrams in one tablet per day did the job. And instead of 50-100 hot flashes per day that I was having with the B Complex, I went down to about three to five. A win-win if you ask me.<br />
<br />
Now I have to admit, I did miss a day of my vitamin taking and the cracked corners of the mouth came back. In just one day. So, clearly it's imperative for me to take it on a daily basis, but if that means having my healthy mouth back, I am okay with that.<br />
<br />
Moreover, Riboflavin is also the energy booster. I can attest that I have more energy since I have been taking it. According to the Organic Facts website, "It helps in the conversion of carbohydrates to sugar, which fuels the body's many functions. Riboflavin also plays an active part in the electron transport chain that produces cellular energy. Furthermore, it helps in the processing of amino acids and fats. It can also serve as an antioxidant, which slows the pace of aging." Well, hallelujah for Riboflavin!<br />
<br />
Needless to say, I am a fan. No more cracks and more energy to boot. It's all a good thing!<br />

They are white, or brown or may just blend with whatever skin tone you may have. These small protrusions aren't anything to worry about<br />
<a name='more'></a>from a medical standpoint, but from an aesthetic point of view, they are not something that are going to win any beauty contests.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilyFDHWElc2piV4_NJ2Kqjwn815BNa5kfhbZEjl6oTXRlI6TVSWcWSP0ufeH5ymDQnnWZHxQja1-h7PvxIuHHJMlYLLe7gN5u9uLoQEgfDIK-GGhYdFFHF72tJTbOvGE4uOYIU1FLXE0g/s1600/z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilyFDHWElc2piV4_NJ2Kqjwn815BNa5kfhbZEjl6oTXRlI6TVSWcWSP0ufeH5ymDQnnWZHxQja1-h7PvxIuHHJMlYLLe7gN5u9uLoQEgfDIK-GGhYdFFHF72tJTbOvGE4uOYIU1FLXE0g/s320/z.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Why do skin tags show up?</u> </span></b><br />
<br />
They are apparently common in diabetics and overweight people. I don't fall under either of those categories. They are also caused by friction. I have tended to get them underneath the breasts where the bra line is located, so I can see how friction would be the cause for them to show up there. However, it's also common to have growths around the eyes. I have had four in this location and friction most certainly would not have been the cause here. It's possible that it is hormonal, since I have been moving through peri-menopause for the last couple of years when the tags around the eyes showed up, but I do not have any scientific evidence to back that up. It may just be the luck (or un-luck) of the draw.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>What can we do about them?</u></span></b><br />
<br />
For me they started showing up in my twenties. They are easily removed at a dermatologist's office. They take a blade of some sort and with a quick swipe, it is gone. It isn't painful. It feels more like a light scratch, and then it's done. The problem with this type of removal is a) you have to actually go to the doctor's office to have it done and b) insurance. Insurance carriers have a tendency to want nothing to do with paying for skin tag removal, because it's purely for vanity's sake that one would be removing them. If you are lucky to find a doctor who will "<i>exaggerate</i>" the truth to the insurance company and claim they are "<i>concerned</i>" by the look of it and want to make certain it isn't something more serious than it really is, then you are in luck. Not every doctor will do that though.<br />
<br />
The good news is, there is a way around this procedure. It's called apple cider vinegar.<br />
<br />
I personally use Bragg's brand, because it's organic—and more to the point, it works. I swab a bit on in the morning and again in the evening before bed. The length of time it takes for it to be gone can be hours, or days. For me, it seems the standard time frame is about two weeks, but I recently had a brown one that took four weeks.<br />
<br />
This one tag was more stubborn than the others I had had in the past, and at first I wasn't even sure if it was going to work at all. Much to my chagrin, it just kept looking the same after each application. Nevertheless, I refused to give up, and eventually it began to shrivel up. Like a dying flower in a vase I knew its days were numbered and I was close to releasing it. And I was right! Victory was at last at hand after only a few days of its withering state.<br />
<br />
So, yes, sometimes the procedure is quick. Sometimes it takes some endurance, but rest assured it will work for the cost of a few dollars at the local market.<br />
<br />
The one thing that I want to mention is to be very careful if you are using apple cider vinegar around the eyes. While, I was able to remove all of the skin tags near my eyes, it is definitely not a good thing to get the vinegar <i>in</i> the eyes themselves. Vinegar is acidic and I can attest to it feeling like acid burning through this delicate tissue. So, use extreme caution and a Q-Tip only over the one area, making sure it goes nowhere near the eyeball itself.<br />
<br />
As always, don't mistake a mole for a skin tag. If you have an unusual mole or if you aren't sure what you are looking at, please seek out a physician.<br />

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Ear infections. They are childhood diseases, right? That's what I thought anyway. I hadn't had an ear infection since I was maybe 8 or 10. I used to get them all the time, but that was years ago. Fast forward to age 49 when I rolled out of bed with that all too familiar </span><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">throbbing pain inside</span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"> my ear. </span><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">It was as though I stepped backward in time into the 1970's. It may have been nearly forty years since I had this kind of malady, but that didn't seem to matter. My memory banks clicked into overdrive as though it were merely yesterday since my last battle with this ailment. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0PhoHSUtbYxa_eig_qBcILnwx163upFz8cgSUrVLX1JA9hRpNwx_gVMR_M86kENtq00QE0bjoHu_zc6bDWVXqEBetXp3w4z9CpmSlExNNO9BxIzkFJYLhc_7GBe52WgI1IRvViKC3kJM/s1600/ear+infection.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0PhoHSUtbYxa_eig_qBcILnwx163upFz8cgSUrVLX1JA9hRpNwx_gVMR_M86kENtq00QE0bjoHu_zc6bDWVXqEBetXp3w4z9CpmSlExNNO9BxIzkFJYLhc_7GBe52WgI1IRvViKC3kJM/s320/ear+infection.jpg" width="243" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">First of all, what is an ear infection? According to Healthline, <i>"<span style="line-height: 28px;">An ear infection occurs when a bacterial or viral infection affects the middle ear—the sections of your ear just behind the eardrum. Ear infections can be painful because of inflammation and fluid build up in the middle ear. </span><span style="line-height: 28px;">Ear infections can be chronic or acute. Acute ear infections are painful but short in duration.</span><span style="border-image-outset: initial; border-image-repeat: initial; border-image-slice: initial; border-image-source: initial; border-image-width: initial; border: 0px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><span style="line-height: 28px;">Chronic ear infections do not clear up, or they recur many times. Chronic ear infections can cause permanent damage to the middle and inner ear."</span></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Allergies and colds seem to be the common trigger for ear infections. I had bronchitis at the time, so that made sense. An excess of mucus seems to put the ears over the edge. Smoking, ear wax buildup, and swollen adenoids are yet another set of culprits. According to the Mayo Clinic, <i>"<span style="color: #111111; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">Adenoids are two small pads of tissues high in the back of the nose believed to play a role in immune system activity. This function may make them particularly vulnerable to infection and inflammation. </span><span style="color: #111111; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">Because adenoids are near the opening of the eustachian tubes, inflammation or enlargement of the adenoids may block the tubes, thereby contributing to middle ear infection. Inflammation of adenoids is more likely to play a role in ear infections in children because children have more active and relatively larger adenoids."</span></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #111111; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">So, now I knew what an ear infection is and how it is caused, but what are some methods to get rid of it—organically? Sure, I could run to the doctor and he or she could give me a prescription for antibiotics, but I don't want chemicals in my body anymore. It's natural medicine or nothing for me these days. Not to mention the fact, that if the cause of the infection was viral and not bacterial then an antibiotic wouldn't work anyway. Therefore, a little research was in order.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><b><u>FOOD INTAKE</u></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><b><u><br /></u></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">While an allopathic doctor usually ignores food
allergies, a naturopath might steer your way to look at the food you are ingesting. Considering that conventional foods tend to be at the core of many of our maladies, there is a good chance that they could be the problem with an ear infection too.
Try releasing gluten, milk products and all so-called conventional NON-organic
foods and see if the ear infection goes away. You may also find that any number of other issues in your body may clear up, as well. Changing the way we eat is always a helpful hint for a happy, healthy body.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><u><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">SALT IN A SOCK</span></u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b><u><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">The first thing I tried was the salt in a sock method—only I didn't use a sock. I used a washcloth instead. I didn't like the idea of putting a sock on my ear. Clean or not, I just kept thinking about all the floors these socks of mine have walked on. A washcloth seemed more hygienic to me. I heated up a cup or so of salt for about 5-10 minutes over the stove. Afterwards, I bundled up the now warm salt inside my wash cloth and tied a rubber band around the top to keep the contents inside the cloth. It was too hot to touch, so I waited a few moments before putting it over my ear. I also used another towel in between my salt cloth and my face, so I wouldn't burn myself. The trick is to know your limits with regards to the heat. Don't over do it. After 5 or 10 minutes on my ear, I felt better, but it wasn't a cure. I needed to do it again the next day. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b><u><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">TEA TREE OIL</span></u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Dr. Josh Ash states in his YouTube video that Tea Tree oil around the ear (please note to NOT put it <i>inside</i> the ear, but on the outside only) is beneficial for aiding in the treatment of ear infections. It is a wonderful antiseptic that I personally use on all sorts of cuts, scrapes and other minor wounds. So, I placed some around the exterior of my ear for good measure.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<b><u><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">CHIROPRACTIC MEDICINE</span></u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Dr. Ash also claims that chiropactric care is helpful in healing ear infections. I did not try this method myself, but decided to add it here in case someone else is interested in trying it.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><b><u>GARLIC OIL</u></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><b><u><br /></u></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Garlic Oil? That one sounded rather strange to me. Was I trying to ward off vampires from making their way inside my ears? Would I suddenly be in the mood for a bowl of pasta? It might have seemed strange, but over and over again I found this remedy plastered on the internet. If it worked for other bloggers and naturopaths, maybe it would work for me too. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">I assumed when I went to the grocery store to buy my supplies, the clerk would guide me to the salad section for an over-sized bottle of olive oil. Thankfully, I was mistaken. Instead we made our way to the medicinal area. Lo and behold there was a small one-ounce bottle of organic olive oil with garlic, calendula, St. John's Wort, and mullein just sitting there waiting for me to pick up. Its bottle top was an ear dropper, which certainly made the pouring process much easier than how I had envisioned it. I had imagined myself dressed like Lucille Ball in an I Love Lucy episode trying to manage handling a large bottle of olive oil over my ear without spilling (which of course, I would fail miserably at), followed by having to shove garlic in my ears with my fingers. So, this seemed like a breeze. </span><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">I just needed this tiny bottle and I was good to go.</span><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">The directions said to heat it up before each use. I boiled some water and poured maybe half of an inch or so into a coffee mug where I had already placed the bottle. After five minutes, the contents were warm and ready to go. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">A few drops into the ear was all I needed. I laid down for a few minutes so that my ear could absorb whatever it needed to absorb and then used a cloth to gather the excess. The good news was that my ear felt better immediately. I decided to use it twice a day for a week for good measure, and it worked!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Apparently, garlic is an excellent antibiotic, without the use of chemicals. Mother Earth already knows what it's doing, so instead of spending a bucket load of money at the pharmacy, I spent maybe $10 at the grocery store.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">...And that is certainly a good thing! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

Most of us have had it at least once. I, on the other hand, have
had it thrust upon me at least once a year spanning back into the earliest days
of my childhood. In a few months I will be 50, so needless to say, my throat has
seen a lot of action.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Streptococcus Bacteria is the culprit that causes the infection. More often than not this is a childhood ailment, but adults like myself can get it too. I have the sneaking suspicion that the maternal
line of my family are carriers of the infection as my cousins and siblings all had it umpteen times
in their childhoods too. As far as I know, my cousins outgrew it. As for my
brothers, they had their tonsils removed when we were all kids. The two of them laid on opposite sides of the couch as they recovered and I was actually angry that I
didn't have surgery too. Even at 12 years old I was tired of being sick all the
time and to my young mind, having my tonsils removed must have been the answer. Why
was I left out of this healing loop?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Years after that event, I continued to suffer with the usual symptomatic culprits—swollen glands, sometimes I had a fever, but usually just a feeling of lethargy, and <i>always</i> I inevitably had a throbbing throat that was red and filled the all too
familiar white lumps tucked in the crevices at the back of my throat. It's like
someone placed a bunch of popcorn back there with a glue stick. If only I could
wipe them away with my tooth brush! Alas, that wasn't going to happen. I had to
think of something else. It would be late in my 49th year when I finally
discovered the answer, but it was well worth the wait.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, what was my
glorious solution? Apple Cider Vinegar and water. Yep. That's it. Of course, the vinegar needs to be organic for it to work. I always carry Bragg's in my refrigerator, but there may be other brands that I am unaware of that would work just as well. The key is to use ORGANIC or nothing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I never measure anything, but I filled an 8 ounce glass with maybe 5-10% vinegar and the rest with <i>warm</i> water. I'll be honest that this type of vinegar doesn't taste all that great and the more you use the harder it may be to gargle, so everyone will need to figure out the best amount for them. After the concoction is made, gargle the entire glass. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I read online that often people are cured after only one gargling session. I, on the other hand, had four sessions over a two day period. It felt better after each time I gargled, so I knew it was working, leading to the final outcome of being totally healed!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another by-product of this remedy is that it worked on not only the strep, but I also had an underlying sore throat for about a year. Nothing so bad that I couldn't function, but I needed to use throat spray every day for what seemed like forever. However, since using this combination, I haven't had an issue with my throat whatsoever. The even better news is that I didn't need to use chemically based antibiotics, nor did I need to have a surgical procedure. That means it was not only a whole lot cheaper than having do deal with medical expenses, I also didn't have to use anything that could harm my body in other ways. Organically healing is the only way I choose to go.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
...And that is certainly a good thing!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Sleep. That's all I wanted to do. For about a month I spent as much time as possible either taking a nap, or at the very least I kept my body in the horizontal position in order to rest. I found it painfully difficult to get off the couch even for the simple things like using the<br />
<a name='more'></a>restroom. My body may have been screaming at me to get up, but I simply did not want to move. It was as though my batteries needed to be recharged, but the electrical current was taking a hiatus from getting its groove on. I was stuck.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5Sf_wBg00_rY-b4mPRZuFoba_SoJT-uzEw7P53LHflRK7UwRFSaaiVbuiXrCFTnzTKlvR0iPpbiz1BYL7tMSr7vbI_Rt-IuuVTeHGj5AsQ44DUhmQULWi3nmQgUheRoJbR8PEcriKREY/s1600/42054507_s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5Sf_wBg00_rY-b4mPRZuFoba_SoJT-uzEw7P53LHflRK7UwRFSaaiVbuiXrCFTnzTKlvR0iPpbiz1BYL7tMSr7vbI_Rt-IuuVTeHGj5AsQ44DUhmQULWi3nmQgUheRoJbR8PEcriKREY/s320/42054507_s.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Even prior to this period of intense exhaustion, the signs were there. I should have seen the writing on the wall. I just wasn't paying attention until it got more serious. However, for about a year I had been having trouble getting out of bed in the morning. I forced myself to get up, but it wasn't an easy feat. Moreover, I haven't been feeling like writing much. Writing is my passion, but you wouldn't know it as of late. Before this all started I kept up with all my blogs, my inspirational monthly newsletter and other projects that I am working on, but most of that has been falling by the wayside. It felt like torture to sit at my desk. By the time I reached the pinnacle of my exhaustive state, I was resting for up to a couple of hours so that I could have enough energy to take a five minute break from nap-time in order to take care of my dishes only to return to the couch after only a few minutes.<br />
<br />
It wasn't as though I wasn't sleeping through the night either. On the contrary, I had been sleeping better than I ever had before. Lack of sleep was certainly not the issue. At first, I chalked it up to an energetic shift that my body was picking up on, but as the pattern continued, I realized there was more to it then just that. After four weeks of this nonsense, I decided it was high time to get down to business and do a little research.<br />
<br />
Initially, I figured to go straight to the Source and ask The Universe what was up with my body. Meditation is your one-stop shop to find out all the answers that we seek. Think Google multiplied by infinity. It's our internal library system that we can use at any time without having to step outside our doors to get there.<br />
<br />
Accordingly, I quieted my mind I was told to take a look at my adrenals. I wasn't even sure what an adrenal was, but hey, who am I to argue with The Universe? Truth be told, a friend of mine had warned me that my adrenals might be an issue a few weeks prior to my meditation, but I was too tired to take note of her suggestion. She may have been a messenger, but I wasn't ready to hear it yet. However, now that my internal wisdom was giving me the same information, I knew it was time I stood up to pay attention. Well, I didn't really <i>stand</i> up. I couldn't handle that as of yet.<br />
<br />
Modern technology to the rescue!<br />
<br />
I may not have felt like sitting at my desk, but I could pick up my phone. So, while taking comfort in lying down on my couch, I got to work. When I typed in the "adrenal" I came across a plethora of information on adrenal fatigue. So, that seemed like a good enough place to start. I clicked on the first of many reports on the subject and as I read the symptoms, I discovered that I had all of them. The bell rang off in my head. It was clear to me that this was my problem.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>MY SYMPTOMS</u>: </span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
*Overly tired, to the point of sheer exhaustion</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
*Lack of energy<br />
*Not wanting to do much of anything, including my beloved writing</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
*Salt and sugar cravings<br />
(I was using up to four times the amount of salt on my food as normal)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
*A bit (not much, but a bit) more energy from the hours of 6-9 pm</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
*Moodiness </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
*Prolonged stress</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
*Forgetfulness and a general fog in my mind<br />
(even reading was difficult, because I would have to re-read page after page)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
*Trouble with healing other minor injuries or ailments</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Certainly, all of these symptoms could have been caused by other ailments, but I decided to look up some holistic cures for this particular affliction anyway to see what would happen.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>HEALING STONES:</u></span></b><br />
<br />
I am a collector of stones and I have an ample supply of healing crystals. Ergo, since it was already in my home that would be my first stop. I discovered that rose quartz, kyanite and aventurine were some of the many stones that are effective in healing this malady. Instead of trying just one, I grabbed one of each to create a triple dose of healing goodness.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I held the stones in my hands and began an hour long meditation. Almost immediately I could feel the energy blasting in the adrenal area of the body—but it didn't end there. It was clear that the source of the energy was focused on that area, but it also moved down the lengths of my legs to the tips of my toes and upward to the crown of my head. That is very unusual. For the most part, healing stones work on a specific area or two that are most in need, but my whole body was getting in on the action. It seemed pretty clear to me that the adrenals were affecting not just those organs, but my entire body. Even within this short period of time, I was beginning to feel better.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYE9iGw073-edcEYsT-kA19mpWYZJr6Mzlnfie_eIzBdRJ_hyphenhyphenegHTTF4ZiRMxnmOFLPKW3I-6tJhNaqtKdw657Tygxjy7kUOHKyOMS0LUATZpXCqV1FX-MxHfavdRVbIFJxyw6Z3kNZtI/s1600/36564012_s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYE9iGw073-edcEYsT-kA19mpWYZJr6Mzlnfie_eIzBdRJ_hyphenhyphenegHTTF4ZiRMxnmOFLPKW3I-6tJhNaqtKdw657Tygxjy7kUOHKyOMS0LUATZpXCqV1FX-MxHfavdRVbIFJxyw6Z3kNZtI/s320/36564012_s.jpg" width="285" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Image of the adrenals.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I decided to continue the healing process during my sleep time. I kept the three stones next to me on my bed. I asked The Universe to utilize my mattress as an intermediary between the stones and my body. It worked, my entire body began to energetically vibrate from the mattress that was receiving energy from the stones. Additionally, I added two flat amber resin pieces to my healing recipe. I laid on top of them, placing each of them underneath the kidney area.<br />
<br />
The adrenals are crescent moon shaped organs attached to the kidneys and I figured the amber would be good for grounding their energy into my human form. The energy radiated specifically in that part of my body, but once again I felt it everywhere. Admittedly, while it felt really good, it was difficult for me to fall asleep. But the next morning when I awoke I had more energy than I had in a month. Less sleep and feeling invigorated. That was certainly a switch.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>WHAT ARE THE ADRENALS ANYWAY?</u></span></b><br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><u><br /></u></span></b>
I was already feeling much better, but how could these little body parts make me feel this way? Well, the adrenals are a part of the glandular system, which means they produce hormones<span style="font-size: 16px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; text-align: left;">—t</span>hose lovely organisms that help to regulate our bodies. In this case, there are two parts of the adrenals that, according to <b><a href="http://www.endocrineweb.com/endocrinology/overview-adrenal-glands">www.EndocrineWeb.com</a>,</b> produce the following:<br />
<br />
<ul style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22.3999996185303px; margin: 0px 0px 1em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 1.5em; text-align: start; vertical-align: baseline;">
<li style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; line-height: inherit; list-style: disc; margin: 5px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The adrenal cortex—the outer part of the gland—produces hormones that are vital to life, such as cortisol (which helps regulate metabolism and helps your body respond to stress) and aldosterone (which helps control blood pressure).</span></li>
<li style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; line-height: inherit; list-style: disc; margin: 5px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The adrenal medulla—the inner part of the gland—produces nonessential (that is, you don’t need them to live) hormones, such as adrenaline (which helps your body react to stress).</span></li>
</ul>
In essence, they are the management team of the stress situation in our bodies.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>ADRENAL FATIGUE CAUSES</u>:</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, what causes adrenal fatigue? According to allopathic medicine, it is not something that can be easily identified. So, a Western doctor will likely not consider it a real thing. However, alternative medical practitioners say that it is caused by prolonged stress and/or chronic respiratory infections—both of which I have had. According to <a href="http://www.adrenalfatigue.org/"><b>www.AdrenalFatigue.org</b></a>, "Certain lifestyles (such as) poor diet, substance abuse, too little sleep and rest, too many pressures, chronic illness or repeated infections, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, prolonged situations that you feel trapped or helpless (bad relationships, stressful jobs, poverty, imprisonment) or maternal adrenal fatigue during gestation," are all causal factors in adrenal fatigue.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A few of those things fit me to a tee. Clearly, de-stressing was going to be at the heart of my healing process. So, I made it my mission to work on living in the present moment and not worry about tomorrow. Meditation is always a key factor in de-stressing, particularly grounding exercises. Ergo, I added that to my healing toolkit, as well.<br />
<br />
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>HEALING with ORGANIC FOODS & SUPPLEMENTS</u>:</span></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My stones helped me to feel better and I had more information about what the adrenals were, but I still had more work to do do. Knowing that ORGANIC food is a primary healing tool for me, I next looked at my food intake. According to my research, it is important to eat a lot of protein in the morning for breakfast and a medium intake of protein for lunch. I added two hard-boiled eggs to my meal and it seemed to help get me through my work day with much greater ease. Proteins are the building blocks of life and they are known for the curative properties. It would stand to reason that they would help in the healing of my over-tiredness.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Supplements were next on my to-do list. While there are many things listed online, what spoke to my intuition for my personal healing were four things: ORGANIC vitamin C (so not the stuff made with absorbic acid. The real stuff only people); ORGANIC ginseng root; ORGANIC B-Complex; and ORGANIC chamomile tea. I already had the tea so I started with that and ordered the rest online to be delivered.</div>
<div>
<br />
While these supplements are good for a whole host of different reasons, the following is what caught my attention for my own needs:<br />
<br />
*ORGANIC vitamin C is the good old standby for helping with the immune system, but you may not know that helps with handling our stress.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
*ORGANIC ginseng root helps with fatigue and the immune system.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
*ORGANIC B-Complex contains the eight different types of B vitamins and helps with digestion and keeping our bodies energized.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
*ORGANIC chamomile is known for its calming factors so I supposed it would be good for calming my nerves.<br />
<br />
Hmm, there seemed to be a common theme here.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>ROAD TO RECOVERY</u>:</span></b></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was pretty obvious to me that by holding onto my stress, I was creating the dynamic for the internal implosion to take place. After utilizing the various resources in my burgeoning healing toolkit, I am now on the road to recovering to the good old me, sitting here, writing these words, and loving every minute of it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
...And that is a good thing!</div>

About a year ago, I started to randomly shake in my body. I don't mean a Parkinson's sort of shaking, where it's continuous. It was more like when someone gets a chill from out of the blue or when a person is suddenly frightened and the body instantaneously jerks. You<br />
<a name='more'></a>have no control. Your body just has a mind of its own. That was me, particularly last summer when it was happening all the time. The only thing was that I wasn't cold and no one frightened me either. I would just suddenly get an electric shock that charged through me, which made my arms and shoulders raise into the air in order to do their new twitching routine. Needless to say, I was getting a little tired from all this shuddering I was doing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBkbKaCW9f7KduVB63Mu_vK9gzlPvJ_yJhwLqHxFVtffGQzuPFDCi5bFqUB1nTXfLL46nlK0oGm7cTeU73Qgx-ZeXLA85RplSjTCFWv7vVBkM_2BAF6SeITwIM10A6505GA8Mc2PrrY2U/s1600/kidneys+rendering.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBkbKaCW9f7KduVB63Mu_vK9gzlPvJ_yJhwLqHxFVtffGQzuPFDCi5bFqUB1nTXfLL46nlK0oGm7cTeU73Qgx-ZeXLA85RplSjTCFWv7vVBkM_2BAF6SeITwIM10A6505GA8Mc2PrrY2U/s1600/kidneys+rendering.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At about the same time, several other things happened. For starters, little grey hairs started popping out on the top of my head. I am now forty-nine, so it seemed reasonable to presume that age was the underlying factor. I certainly didn't question it then, but now I am not so sure. Could it be that it was one of many symptoms for a different issue all together? I wouldn't know the answer for awhile. I just had to continue down my life path to see where it led me. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It led me to find that my list continued to grow. For one thing, while my lower back has been an issue for awhile, it has needed some additional work lately. Moreover, I developed a rash on both of my legs as well as my arms. Finally, I am a lifelong avid water drinker, which in turn means I have always gone to the bathroom regularly, but as of late I had started going about thirty times a day. I would often wake up five or even up to ten times during the night just to relieve myself. Worrying if there was a bathroom available at all times did not seem like a fun way to spend the last half of my life, that's for sure.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One thing after another was going wrong in my body, but I chalked it up to middle age. That's just what happens, right? It didn't occur to me that these symptoms might be related. They didn't seem to have anything in common with one another, so it's no wonder. Thankfully, I would eventually discover that that there actually was a common thread between them all.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fast forward to a few weeks ago. when I was at my acupuncturist's office. As she placed the needles into my body, I began doing my twitching routine that was a common occurrence for me these days. I wasn't there for the twitching, but I felt inclined to talk to her about it. The first thing she asked me is how I feel about wind. She wondered if I detested it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Well, I don't <i>detest</i> it. That's a little strong," I told her, "But it certainly is my least favorite weather pattern to be in. Why do you ask?"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Knowing full well that Chinese Medicine looks at the whole of the body and the environment, in order to find the source of an issue, I waited with anticipation to find out what she had to say.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Tremors have a tendency to be about wind in the body and those who have a predominant amount of <a href="http://www.itmonline.org/articles/feng/feng.htm"><i><b>wind</b></i></a> in the body tend not to like to be out in the wind either. The kidneys are related to this wind factor."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I thought that was interesting and I wanted to do a little more research on the subject. When I arrived home I woke Google up from its nap and put it to work for me. According to Chinese Medicine, everything she said was correct and lo and behold it turns that every single thing I had mentioned were symptoms of weak kidneys. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, I did what any reiki practitioner would do. I looked up where the kidneys were on the body and after finding out where they needed to go, I gently placed my hands onto my lower back. My entire body became overheated while my hands were on energetic overdrive. It was clear to me that my kidneys were indeed the cause of all these seemingly random issues and that I needed to take care of them. That very night after working on myself, I only woke up one time in the night to use the restroom. I was back to normal in just one session! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I decided that I wasn't going to stop there though. I practiced reiki on my back regularly and for the next two weeks I laid on some of my quartz crystals so that the healing energy from these powerful master healing stones could do their thing too. Every time I placed the stones near my kidneys, energetic charges would soothe that space. So, I knew it was working. I also read that amber helps in healing kidneys. Ergo, I made my way to the crystal shop and found a couple of resin pieces in their raw form and began sleeping on top of those overnight. Each night I felt a cooling sensation on my kidneys with those stones. It felt like I was being nurtured from the inside out. I suppose that nurturing was exactly what I needed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Considering the fact that what we put into our bodies is paramount in directing our health one way or the other, I put on my investigative cap once again to find out what was my best resource for my dietary medicine cabinet. Any organic foods that are black are apparently good for the kidneys. Accordingly, I added blackberries and black sesame seeds to my shopping list and those items found themselves into my diet. They not only taste good, they are good for me too!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since my day of revelation, I, of course, asked my acupuncturist to work on my kidneys every time I see her to add more healing goodness to my healing toolkit.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally, the most important healer for the kidneys is releasing stress. I have been one big fat stress bag for quite some time, so it seemed to me that I had to do some meditating dedicated to the releasing of my stress. In a quiet state I told my kidneys that I loved them. I honored them. I thanked them for bringing all this awareness in my body so that I could take action towards healing them. Just by virtue of paying heed to this particular part of my body seemed to help in the physical healing of it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to <a href="http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/function-kidneys">Web.com</a>, the kidneys are the cleanup crew that "remove wastes and extra water from the blood to form urine." If the kidneys are not healthy then one can conclude that the waste in the body would not be processed properly and it would stand to reason that this alone would reek havoc on the body in various ways. Case in point, all my various issues.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The good news is that it is not a life sentence. It has been three weeks since my wind/kidney diagnosis and the only time I have any tremors is when I am receiving energetic healing from my acupuncturist or massage therapist. These are normal reactions for some people during energetic sessions so I am fine with that. Other than these few occurrences, I am tremor free. My rash is nearly gone too, while my lower back if feeling pretty good, as well. I am not sure if it has affected the color of my hair or not, but regardless of that, the rest of me is on the road to recovery—and that is certainly a good thing.</div>

Since childhood, I was plagued with an incessant cough. I coughed perhaps every minute or so of every waking moment of my life. Multiply that by about forty years and you have a lot of coughing going on. By the time I was in my thirties, I was finally diagnosed with<br />
<a name='more'></a>asthma. The technician who tested me proclaimed that I had the worst case of asthma he had ever seen—hence, the reason for the aforementioned cough. A decade later, I became sick for nearly a year, where I practically lived in and out of various doctors' offices. The cough had turned into chronic bronchitis, which served to exacerbate my asthma, making it increasingly difficult to catch my breath. Imagine a ninety-year-old with emphysema and you will come to close to what it was like for me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5o3pFizeTCR_IEM1Fo3QlJ3Y4gZdi4_yC_w-GgQ_BRh9y54AXMfBNL8UWKe9H9aDE94kHqBjJUnaeS8lvwjljYBYq8q9Y4f_WO5RG0Iqmab49CvuHyZwnyKmSqmUYzztFXF2Odco-euE/s1600/z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5o3pFizeTCR_IEM1Fo3QlJ3Y4gZdi4_yC_w-GgQ_BRh9y54AXMfBNL8UWKe9H9aDE94kHqBjJUnaeS8lvwjljYBYq8q9Y4f_WO5RG0Iqmab49CvuHyZwnyKmSqmUYzztFXF2Odco-euE/s1600/z.jpg" height="255" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I couldn't breathe easily. I couldn't sleep easily, and I disturbed most of the neighbors with my continual hacking. This culminated with me finally ending up in the emergency room where I was strapped to an I.V. and a ventilator. At least I could finally breathe like a normal person. When the shift rolled over and a new physician was in charge of my well-being, he walked into the room and announced rather matter-of-factly, that I had a food allergy. He further told me that I needed to figure out what it was that I was allergic to so that I could stop being so sick. This was the single moment that would change my life forever. For this was where I embarked down the road of not only learning about our food, but becoming a food advocate in the process.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Systematically, I began eliminating foods from my diet until I figured out what was affecting me, and low and behold when I figured it out, I got better. I had cured myself with food. Even the interminable cough was released into the wild blue yonder. When people ask, "How did you do it?" I reply with the simple truth, "With my food."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I furthered my studies by reading books, blogs and anything I could get my hands on to learn more. Additionally, I discovered a plethora of teachers on TEDtv. Ann Cooper is one of those fine teachers. She is the Director of Nutritional Services at the Berkeley Unified School District. Her obvious passion for teaching children how to change their relationship with food strikes such a strong chord with me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We are all affected by our food. If you don't believe me, check to see how many medications you have in your medicine cabinet or in your kitchen cupboard. Organic food and herbs should be our medicine, not more chemicals. Unfortunately, so many people do not see the value of organic food. They say it is too expensive. The truth is, that it is a whole lot less expensive than the prescription medications the vast majority of us use to combat the effects of the detrimental food we are consuming. Considering the fact that diabetes and complications from obesity are on the rise at alarming rates, not to mention a whole host of other ailments, which are quickly becoming prolific as our cultural way of life, it is imperative that we take notice of the source. The foods that we ingest and the food that we give to our children are sadly usually that source. Our kids are our future and it is time to teach them the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, so that they can become healthy, productive adults. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I highly encourage you to step into Ms. Cooper's 19 minute classroom (video below), to learn more about food in our schools. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Shhh! No one wants to talk about the dreaded topic of the all too common hemorrhoid. I first learned about what these were from a friend when I was in the seventh grade. She swore me to secrecy that I <i>never ever ever</i> tell anyone that she had them. When I</div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
explained that I didn't even know what a hemorrhoid was, she gave me her best descriptive version. "They are swollen veins in the anus that are caused by <i><b>stress</b></i>! Mine can be the size of golf balls!" </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjegk9jMIsyd4qBefOL9FuxGWAVV9aHgAAouzLq-SqB9EqlEuYLR1EKOBpbuL-IDUc29EvaSP3TE7f9ugATImaeyrH6iYOaXWiuUy6fH9YAx8RrEfxac_vqztPuBVbae8zs7gEtdA1ZPE/s1600/turmeric+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjegk9jMIsyd4qBefOL9FuxGWAVV9aHgAAouzLq-SqB9EqlEuYLR1EKOBpbuL-IDUc29EvaSP3TE7f9ugATImaeyrH6iYOaXWiuUy6fH9YAx8RrEfxac_vqztPuBVbae8zs7gEtdA1ZPE/s1600/turmeric+2.jpg" height="211" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ouch! While they are not always that large, they can nevertheless be equally painful. Needless to say, that did not sound particularly pleasant to me. And since that fateful day of learning about these painful pustules, I have been told over and over again by so many people that they too are afflicted with hemorrhoids, that I wonder if actually more of us have them than not. The good news is that there are organic treatments out there that work to relieve the pain and reduce the swelling of these unwanted inconveniences. And since they come from nature, your body will not have to put up with any detrimental chemicals being introduced to it from allopathic pharmaceuticals. Hallelujah!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #660000; font-size: large;"><u>Turmeric</u>:</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First and foremost, one needs to introduce an anti-inflammatory into their system to reduce the swelling. Turmeric has over two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds in it and is the perfect remedy for any of your inflammation blues. Turmeric is a perennial plant of the ginger family. Often used in Indian cuisine, its bright yellow-orange color is topped only by its pungent flavor. Taken orally, a small dose of turmeric mixed with the sweetness of a good unprocessed honey reduces the inflammation that cause so many ailments, including hemorrhoids, that this particular spice is a must-have in one's kitchen. To learn more about the healing properties of this super-spice, read my post <b><a href="http://organic-bliss.blogspot.com/2014/06/tumeric-anti-inflammatory-and-more.html">Turmeric: The Anti-Inflammatory and More</a>. </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<b><span style="color: #660000; font-size: large;"><u>Witch-Hazel</u>:</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Witch-hazel is a primarily North American, Japanese and Chinese deciduous shrub. Its oil is used as an astringent and aids in the constriction of the swelling. <i>Thayers Original Witch Hazel </i>brand with Aloe Vera has both organic witch-hazel and aloe vera in its formula. Used topically in the morning after your first bowel movement and in the evening before bed, will help to rid minor skin irritations. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #660000; font-size: large;"><u>Other Astringents</u>:</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">If witch-hazel isn't your thing, there are a whole host of organic astringents that are available. The more common ones include alum, acacia, alcohol, </span>bayberry, <span style="text-align: start;">Bragg's Organic A</span>pple Cider Vinegar (or other organic distributors), <span style="text-align: start;">sage, and yarrow.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #660000; font-size: large;"><u>Proper Cleaning</u>:</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">We Americans have a tendency to ignore the subject of cleaning one's backside, but it is very important in maintaining your health and well-being. There is a reason why the phrase, 'Cleanliness is next to Godliness,' exists. Bacteria resides in fecal matter and it can wreak havoc on our constitution. Granted some bacteria is good for you, but not all of them. That being said, in some cultures, proper cleaning after each bowel movement is a must. Toilet paper simply cannot do the job as well as a good organic soap can. Add a washcloth and water either from a bidet or a handheld shower-head to the mix and you have a winning combination for your clean living. Moreover, maintaining proper cleanliness not only helps to release the pain when a hemorrhoid flares up, it also is helpful in preventative medicine. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #660000; font-size: large;"><u>Meditation</u>:</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">My friend in the seventh grade was right</span>—stress is a leading cause in the outbreak of hemorrhoids. Meditation helps to ward off any and all stress-related ailments. Plus, it assists in shifting our moods to a more harmonious state, enabling us to relieve much of our internalized tension. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Furthermore, during meditation, you may feel obliged to repeat in your mind what you must learn from this hemorrhoid that has afflicted you. Once you know the root cause, you may be able to avoid it from happening in the future. If it does come back, then continue asking what it is you need to learn from the experience so that you may move on.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As always, we must find what works best for our own individual bodies to find a cure, but I hope these ideas help you on your way in finding your perfect healing solution.</div>

<br />
Cancer is not a disease of a particular body part. According to the documentary, <i><b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/CANCER-curable-NOW-DVD-NTSC/dp/0987086901">Cancer is Curable NOW</a></b></i>, it is a condition of the <i>entire</i> body. It is caused from our lifestyle choices. The physical, mental/emotional and Spiritual aspects of our Being all play a role in what shows up for us in our corporeal self. Unfortunately, for generations, we have been trained to think that a medical doctor is somehow akin to the word of God. What he says goes and that's it. It doesn't matter that he may only spend less than a minute with us. It doesn't matter that he has no idea what our lifestyle choices are. He simply writes out the prescription and moves onto the next patient. Done deal. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The truth is that we can't rely on the proverbial pill (that is filled with toxins, I might add) to cure whatever ails us. We have to make change. Radical lifestyle change. It's not about eating right for five minutes only to go back to our old habits. Rather, it is imperative to consciously shift every aspect of how we live. But, the medical industry that is held hostage by the pharmaceutical companies doesn't want us to know that. Curing cancer would kill a 125 billion (with a "B") annual business. So, why would anyone in the medical/pharmaceutical industry want to restore us to our genuine health and well-being, when we are lining their pockets with gold.<br />
<br />
Exercise, diet, meditation, releasing stress, and so on are crucial factors to getting to the core of why we manifest any disease. At the same time, these healthy choices gives us the ability to release any ailment into the wild blue yonder. The documentary discusses how exercise reduces cancer cells by 50%. That is an incredibly high number, from something we can do for free and without putting the damaging toxins into our body from chemotherapy. Moreover, Nature doesn't have side-effects, but the same cannot be said of conventional medicines, where vomiting, hair loss and so on are just par for the course.<br />
<br />
Furthermore, oxygen intake, Vitamin D, especially in healthy doses from the sun, Vitamin K from raw <u>organic</u> vegetables, consuming essential fatty acids, and stopping the ingestion of sugar (which is in most, if not all, processed food and beverages including alcohol and our breakfast juices) are all important factors in creating healing within the body. In fact, sugars <i>feed</i> cancer cells. Yet, the last time I was at the hospital they served juice, jello and other sugars as a part of their culinary selection. It is truly appalling.<br />
<br />
There are countless so-called alternative therapies that have proven to be successful. Each of them actually improves the quality of life instead of hindering it. This documentary mentions several of them. It is definitely a must watch. Whether we are sick or not, we have an opportunity to take our health care out of the hands of corporate bullies. It is time to honor Nature and it is time Nurture ourselves at every level.<br />

If you have ever had swollen eyes, you know how irritating it can be, not only because it is painful, but because the eyes are the first thing everyone sees when they look at you. A friend of mine had allergies last year and her eyes were slightly red and swollen. I<br />
<a name='more'></a>had recently learned that turmeric was an anti-inflammatory. So, being the good friend that I am, I handed her two of my organic snack bars that had turmeric as one of its ingredients to see if it actually worked. She ate the small bars (that were only about an inch-cubed each) and within minutes, I could literally see the swelling go down. Her eyes were back to normal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY8gnsJ116N8LBdnqcKw8W51R8UQ2BVLrFbt4eJimeonWFeteDPGjVnJ_PXF0nwfuAoOvsJo2EV3DHCeHwE11Gwc0PwX6qyqqxLadW1362tParXEfPWrBqgYJ-K87SsV217T9gEGxu1HU/s1600/tumeric.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY8gnsJ116N8LBdnqcKw8W51R8UQ2BVLrFbt4eJimeonWFeteDPGjVnJ_PXF0nwfuAoOvsJo2EV3DHCeHwE11Gwc0PwX6qyqqxLadW1362tParXEfPWrBqgYJ-K87SsV217T9gEGxu1HU/s1600/tumeric.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A few months later, I woke up in the morning with swollen eyes myself, only the allergies were causing my eyes to be far worse than my friend's had been. After looking in the mirror, I had no intention of leaving the house looking the way I did, because there was little doubt that people would have thought I had been punched in the face. I wasn't sure if my snack bars would have been strong enough for my needs. However, I had some turmeric in the house leftover from some Indian cooking I had been doing and I decided to go directly to the source. By itself the taste was too much to bear. To counteract the bitterness, I added a teaspoon of organic honey to my 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of turmeric. This I could swallow. I next consumed a full glass of water to not only help with the digestive process, but to clear out any toxins that were in my body. Once again, turmeric was a hero. Within minutes, my eyes were back to normal.<br />
<br />
Furthermore, when I decided to write my next blog on the healing affects of turmeric, I discovered that it was a wonderful remedy for bruises. Three weeks earlier, I had bashed my upper thigh into a corner of a table. Needless to say, that table won its argument with me and the bruise that remained was very likely the most intensely colored mark I have ever had on my body. It was about two inches by four inches of solid blackness, as though that part of my leg had been erased from existence. There seemed to be absolutely no change in color for the entire three weeks. After doing my research, I pulled out my old friends, the turmeric and honey mix, and within only a few hours my bruise had dissipated by about fifty percent! It's now day three and the healing continues, but I am certainly pleased by the result.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Its possible usages far outweigh having curative properties for anti-inflammation too. According to James A. Duke, Ph.D., turmeric has over two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds and as such it aids in the treatment of <b>arthritis</b>. In his comprehensive study, he also concluded that it was beneficial in the treatment of both <b>Alzheimer's Disease</b> and several types of <b>cancer</b>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The World's Healthiest Foods site goes further to say that turmeric has been used in both Indian and Chinese Medicine for five thousand years. It has been commonly utilized for the items mentioned above, but also to heal <b>bloody urine, cardiovascular protection, chest pain, colic, cystic fybrosis, flatulence, hemorrhaging, jaundice, menstrual difficulties </b>and<b> toothaches</b>. Moreover, t<span style="text-align: justify;">urmeric is an excellent source of both manganese and iron and is also a good source for vitamin B6, fiber, copper and potassium.</span><br />
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span>
<span style="text-align: justify;">Moreover, while I was on vacation, I had an asthmatic issue. Don't get me wrong, it was a chronic situation. I simply wasn't breathing as easily as I would have liked. I didn't have any of my teas that I usually use for this purpose, but I did have tumeric with me. It's an anti-inflammatory, so I thought it might help with my breathing situation. It did! Within minutes, I felt much better. </span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Turmeric is a member of the ginger family and has a deep yellow, orange and brownish color. The plant grows in the forests of South and Southeast Asia and is often used in Indian foods, particularly in curry. Turmeric can be consumed as a root, powdered spice, a vitamin or in a tea form. Please note that it is imperative to only utilize organic products for your healing, as the poisons in conventionally farmed produce would counteract any healing properties.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That being said, organic turmeric is one of Mother Nature's gift to us all.</div>

Cow farts. That's what this guy talks about. Sure, we can laugh about it—but, flatulence jokes aside, the methane produced from livestock is the second most leading contributor to the greenhouse effect. These gaseous emissions are leading to the catastrophic<br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I was a child, people approached me constantly in order to tell me that my skin was flawless. "It is like a porcelain doll," they said. I smiled and demurely accepted the compliment, never alluding to the fact that they were sadly mistaken. The truth was that<br />
<a name='more'></a>for a few years I had an interminable burning, itching, scaliness inside each pit of both of my elbows that was inevitably made worse by my incessant scratching. I just couldn't stop. Eventually, the rash began to overtake my entire right arm until it moved up into my neck. With sheer determination, it made its home on the right side of my face, as well. Needless to say, the long sleeves were of little use to me then. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmGUVBIuHE4vFAqMcixp4Lzkaezx44S0uCajlduQCRpWj9MfjxGvB3wLC7MnNjhkY63irp0viOb01bgmGbH6njyaaVdC8JiJhUKXvPdGfuiB45DrwoIlTJT2Ad7sd9MZ8NU89ncLpYaOw/s1600/aloe+vera+plant.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmGUVBIuHE4vFAqMcixp4Lzkaezx44S0uCajlduQCRpWj9MfjxGvB3wLC7MnNjhkY63irp0viOb01bgmGbH6njyaaVdC8JiJhUKXvPdGfuiB45DrwoIlTJT2Ad7sd9MZ8NU89ncLpYaOw/s1600/aloe+vera+plant.jpg" height="211" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My mother took me to the first doctor who advised us to try some Vaseline. It didn't matter if I used their lotion or their petroleum jelly products, I would have been better off using some acid instead. It was as though someone had set my skin ablaze with a flame. Within only a mere moment or two I had to wash it all off of me. Clearly, this wasn't going to work. So, we headed back to the doctor for another consultation. This time he prescribed diaper rash cream. The good news was that it didn't burn me. The bad news was it didn't work either. After the third visit, the flummoxed physician sent me to a specialist. I was going to see a dermatologist.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This man walked into the room with a smile on his face. That was a rare commodity inside the health care facilities I had thus far visited and I immediately liked him. After the usual courtesies of our first introduction he informed my mother and me that I most certainly was allergic to soap. Moreover, my unsightly skin was not some general rash. It had its own name. It was called eczema. He had barely looked at me before making his diagnosis, but my intuition told me that he was right. Hallelujah, this doctor knew what he was talking about! My mother was understandably concerned that her daughter would never again be clean so she asked what I could use instead of the Dial soap I had grown up on. "Cetaphil Lotion will work just fine for her cleaning," he pleasantly answered.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He informed me that it was imperative that I discontinued all the scratching I was doing. My forlorn face could not hide my discomfort. How was I <i>not</i> going to scratch? He told me to blow on it if I needed to, but never again should I scratch any broken out area. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He also conveyed that I should only take one shower every other day as the heat from the water was not good for me. I knew that would never work as I have been, and likely will always be, a shower-aholic. I was just going to have to make due with his other remedies.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally, he filled out a prescription for Lidex. He warned me to never use it on my face or hands as it would scar those areas, but for the rest of my body, it was free game. However, he made certain that I understood to use it sparingly as this cream is very strong. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He was right. The rash I had for a couple of years was now gone. My long sleeves went back into the drawer until autumn. And whenever I felt the need to bring my nails to my skin, I simply blew on the area instead.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Furthermore, I discovered on my own that after every shower if I splashed cold water on my face then immediately afterward put some lotion all over the watered down area (lotion that I was not allergic to, that is), I noticed that the lotion was acting a sealant to trap the cool water acting as a genuine moisturizer for my skin. I have been repeating this same method for forty years. Only a few months ago, I read in the book, <b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Healing-Secrets-Native-Americans-Practices/dp/1579123929"><i>Healing Secrets of the Native Americans</i></a></b> by Porter Shimer where he offered the very same advice on page 182. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thankfully, rarely after this childhood episode did I break out and when I did, the rash usually manifested in very small amounts. I slapped on some Lidex and the next day my porcelain skin would return to its original state. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It had been many years, decades even, since I had an issue, but then I moved to Arizona a few years ago, where the summer heat seems to be a haven for dry skin and my unwanted eczema returned. I had since moved away from GMO products and was consuming only organically grown foods. Using a steroidal cream did not measure up to my organic lifestyle. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In fact, I learned that the steroids in the Lidex cream was the ingredient that would cause the scarring if I had used it on my face or hands. Additionally, according to <a href="http://www.drugs.com/cdi/lidex-cream.html"><b>www.drugs.com</b></a> you don't want to use Lidex under the following conditions:</div>
<ul style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, 'Nimbus Sans L', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.600000381469727px; margin: 0.8em 0px; padding: 0px;">
<li style="line-height: 1.2; list-style: disc; margin: 0px 0px 0.6em 1.6em; padding: 0px;">if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.2; list-style: disc; margin: 0px 0px 0.6em 1.6em; padding: 0px;">if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.2; list-style: disc; margin: 0px 0px 0.6em 1.6em; padding: 0px;">if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.2; list-style: disc; margin: 0px 0px 0.6em 1.6em; padding: 0px;">if you have any kind of skin infection, cuts, scrapes, or lessened blood flow to your skin</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.2; list-style: disc; margin: 0px 0px 0.6em 1.6em; padding: 0px;">if you have had a recent vaccination; have measles, tuberculosis, chickenpox, or shingles; or have had a positive tuberculosis test</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.2; list-style: disc; margin: 0px 0px 0.6em 1.6em; padding: 0px;">if you are taking prednisone or similar medicines</li>
<li style="line-height: 1.2; list-style: disc; margin: 0px 0px 0.6em 1.6em; padding: 0px;">Some other medicines may react so a health provider should be consulted before using</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Baring these factors in mind, while I am certainly grateful to my childhood dermatologist, it was time for me to look into a more organic way of healing myself. <a href="http://bragg.com/products/bragg-organic-apple-cider-vinegar.html"><b>Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar</b></a> was my first stop. I used it topically on the rash twice daily until my skin had cleared. While I don't know the science behind why it works, it feels as though it is cleansing out the bacteria that is causing the red bumps to occur. When used it doesn't exactly burn, but it does tingle the infected skin for about five minutes before calming down. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After it dries, I then added aloe vera to the red protrusions. I don't use the bottled form as it is not fresh. Instead, I cut approximately 1/2 an inch off a live aloe vera plant. The liquid from the plant may or may not immediately begin to drip. Either way, if I squeeze the plant onto the infected area the healing goodness will begin immediately.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Within only two days after using this simple method, the rash on my chin vanished. It took a little longer on my leg, only because I continued shaving over it every day. My recommendation is to NOT shave for faster results, especially considering that the blade of a razor notoriously is laden with bacteria and can make the rash spread just as scratching with fingernails does.<br />
<br />
I also found a product called <b><a href="http://www.boodaorganics.com/butter-tin.html">Booda Butter</a> </b>made from all organic products with shea butter as its base. Frankly, when my rash came back and nothing else was working anymore, this took fifty percent of it away overnight. It is definitely a good find!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What's more, a number of online sources claim that taking Dandelion Root tea internally works well in aiding with healing eczema and I decided to see if it would help me. I noticed that it prevented the itching from occurring in the first place and that was certainly a good thing. I used <b><a href="http://traditionalmedicinals.com/products/roasted-dandelion-root/">Traditional Medicinals</a></b> organic brand. According to its site, it offers a, "pleasantly roasted, sweet and slightly bitter taste." That just about sums it up. For flavor and for its general calming affects, I added peppermint leaves to my tea, but explore what works best for you.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For only a few dollars I was able to heal my skin organically without having to pay a doctor for his or her time and without having to pay a drugstore for a pharmaceutical. Furthermore, please keep in mind that organic apple cider vinegar, dandelion and aloe vera can be utilized for far more healing remedies than just for skin ailments. <i><b>Healing Secrets of the Native Americans</b></i> lists a whole host of uses and I highly recommend this book.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you are like me and are tired of using GMO products on your body, try this method to see if it works for you. Our skin is our largest organ and everything that goes onto it eventually goes into the bloodstream. I, for one, would prefer to have nature taking care of me.</div>

The reason I am passionate about food advocacy is because I myself had a debilitating illness for nearly a year. When I finally discovered that a food allergy to milk products was at the heart of causing my infirmity, I began to delve into discovering as much as I could</div>

As my burgeoning thirst for knowledge increased, I came across an informative TED Talk with <a href="http://www.robynobrien.com/"><b>Robyn O'Brien</b></a> as the guest speaker. This self-proclaimed 'unlikely crusader for cleaning up the food supply' who was raised on 'twinkies and poor boy sandwiches' aroused my curiosity even further as I watched her insightful speech on the links between allergies and our food <i>and</i> the causes of these toxic allergens in our country.</div>

This morning, while perusing my Facebook news feed, I stumbled upon a photo that caught my attention. The words written across the image stated: <i>"Fact: Our current agricultural system uses taxpayer money to subsidize the planting of GMOs, while</i></div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<i style="font-style: italic;">organic farmers are required to pay fees for certification." </i>While I was already aware of the deplorable actions of the USDA by requiring organic farmers to pay exorbitant fees in order to claim that they are organic, I did not realize that the taxpayers were all helping biotech companies to further in the ruination of our planet. So, it seemed to me that I needed to put my investigative cap on in order to learn more about this claim. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY4R4aoNQe4rmN-eI1DX5peRRYHylErWbLJloZWGyNKb9uOipkjLaUZlB3I3wHw8geu98W1-4QorkNX64OonuwAsksgK4FVg4HpHDrBB3Q0qkYnun86OJINQWqJzyEbfxY8EiMNwxSpFw/s1600/z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY4R4aoNQe4rmN-eI1DX5peRRYHylErWbLJloZWGyNKb9uOipkjLaUZlB3I3wHw8geu98W1-4QorkNX64OonuwAsksgK4FVg4HpHDrBB3Q0qkYnun86OJINQWqJzyEbfxY8EiMNwxSpFw/s1600/z.jpg" height="227" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small; text-align: justify;">Image originally posted on the </span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/AlternativeHealthWorks" style="font-size: medium; text-align: justify;">Alternative Health Works Facebook</a><span style="font-size: small; text-align: justify;"> page. </span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Now, over the years, I have been told by various people peddling their foods at local farmers markets that they cannot afford to be certified, even though they are indeed organic. These concerned farmers shared with me that in order to qualify under USDA regulations as organic it would cost somewhere between $10,000 and $50,000 dollars. Yes, I have repeatedly heard this through word of mouth, but today I wanted to see what our government actually had to say about it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Ergo, I visited the <a href="http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/ams.fetchTemplateData.do?template=TemplateN&topNav=&leftNav=NationalOrganicProgram&page=NOPFAQsHowCertified&description=FAQ:%20%20Becoming%20a%20Certified%20Operation"><b>USDA</b></a> page to try to discover exactly how much one has to pay to qualify for organic status. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, only a vague response is posted on the site. Accordingly, it declares, <i>"Actual certification costs or fees vary widely depending on the certifying agent and the size, complexity of your operation. Certification costs may range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars...Typically, there is an application fee, annual renewal fee, assessment on annual production or sales and inspection fees." </i>This confirms to me that not only are the lobbyists for biotech companies so powerful that they can strike deals with our government, making it incredibly difficult for the small farmer to claim organic status, but according to the USDA site, the certification fees vary depending on the particular agent. At least the way it is written it would appear that every agent has free range to charge whatever he or she feels like, without having a standard set of guidelines. Furthermore, there are 'typically' at least four sets of fees organic farmers must endure paying in order to become certified. That in itself is bad enough and leads this particular food lover to wonder how many of our so-called trusted government officials are actually in the back pockets of biotech.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Moreover, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/14/monsanto-gmo-crops-taxpayers-overseas_n_3272136.html"><b>Carey Gillam</b></a> of the Huffington Post reported in May of last year that, <i>"U.S. taxpayers are footing the bill for overseas lobbying that promotes controversial biotech crops developed by U.S.-based Monsanto Co and other seed makers."</i> The USDA refused to comment on this particular investigation, but Monsanto spokesman, Tom Helscher apparently said the following: <i>"Monsanto believes it is critical to maintain an open dialogue with government authorities and trade groups in other countries. We remain committed to sharing information so that individuals can better understand our business and our commitments to support farmers throughout the world as they work to meet the agricultural demands of our world's growing population." </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I have already discussed this fallacy in my article <a href="http://organic-bliss.blogspot.com/2014/04/feed-worldorganically.html"><b>Feed the World...Organically</b></a>, and won't go into too many details here, aside from the fact that these words are simply a product of public relation teams that have been recycling this idea into our heads since the fifties. If I were British I would just have one word to say and that word would be, 'Poppycock!' (okay, I am not British and I just wrote it anyway). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Alas, feeding the world's population is what biotech companies claim, but this is frankly another lie to get us all to come on board to their way of thinking so that they can continue earning unprecedented amounts of money at the expense of our individual health and the health of every living Being on the planet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
To add fuel to the fire, the State Department is not the only governmental agency using tax dollars to supplement an income for biotech. <a href="http://healthimpactnews.com/2013/your-taxpayer-subsidized-farm-bill-aid-goes-to-u-s-billionaire-farmers/"><b>Jason Linkins</b></a>, also from the Huffington Post, cites that the Farm Bill Aid Package, that comes from taxpayer money and which was intended for the small farmer, actually goes to fill billionaire farmers' pockets. In his article he names eleven people with a net worth value of somewhere between $2 billion and close to $34 billion dollars each, who all receive subsidization from the government. I ponder why these people receive aid when they clearly have the means to feed the world many times over without any assistance. One can only speculate why these people, who have more wealth than they can possibly spend in this lifetime, would be receiving these large sums of extra income from us. The only explanation is that we live in a society where those who earn the top one percent of the world's wealth help others who are in that same category to keep as much money as they can for their small circle. In other words, the rich are getting richer as they legally steal from monies meant for those who are genuinely in need of it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Furthermore, Mike Barrett posted on the <a href="http://naturalsociety.com/how-your-taxes-used-by-government-produce-junk-food/"><b>Natural Society</b></a> website in 2012 that healthy crops are not subsidized by the government. On the other hand, GMO crops are subsidized. So more and more farmers are feeling pushed to turn to growing the genetically modified corn and soy that the government pressures them to grow simply so they can make ends meet. This is nothing but a lose-lose situation. We are losing having healthy foods to consume all while the Earth and its inhabitants, from the vegetation to the animal life and from the soil to the water are all being destroyed due to modern farming practices.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The message being presented here is that farmers who are ethical and create wholesome foods are penalized by having to spend cost prohibitive amounts of money just so they can tell the world that what they are selling is indeed real food, while the GMO companies who are poisoning us and the planet at large receive money from every angle that they can. Needless to say, the socio-economic structure of our culture is a racket and we have kept the blindfolds on for long enough. It is time we rise up and take action. We must write to our congressmen and women telling them of our outrage and the fact that we are now <i>demanding</i> change. What's more, we can fight back by eating organically and locally.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
That being said, while it is certainly difficult to understand why these people are allowed to use pervasive techniques in killing our land and our water simply for the sake of earning an extra buck, it is important to note that each individual does make a difference. We all have the opportunity to choose how we live. Are we going to buy GMO or are we going to purchase only healthful organic foods? Will we use pesticides in our garden or will we invite the pollinators in so that our vegetation will naturally propagate? We have to remember that when our food and water is gone there will be nothing left. The important lesson we are all meant to learn is that when we live in harmony with Mother Earth, she will live in harmony with us in return.</div>

Most of us have heard of <a href="http://www.jamieoliver.com/">Jamie Oliver</a>. However, this spirited celebrity chef is more than just a television personality. More importantly, he is a food advocate. In 2010, he received the <a href="http://www.ted.com/participate/ted-prize">TED Prize</a>, which is awarded to an, 'extraordinary individual with a creative and bold vision to spark global change.' It is no wonder that he was the winner that year for he certainly exemplifies excellence.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is his passion to teach every child about food. Many youngsters have no idea what various fruits and vegetables are even called. If kids don't know what an eggplant or an avocado is they are not going to eat them. Instead, fast foods have been placed on the forefront of our collective consciousness and our vocabulary is filled with words like double cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets. Thankfully, he is making waves in changing these children's (along with their parents) perspectives.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Considering the primary killer in our country today is not murder or terrorist attacks as the media seems to want us to believe, but rather it stems from our food, it is imperative that we make change. Let's face it, our food industry is fiercely contributing to the pandemic in our nation and around the world. Heart disease, obesity and so on are all preventable and Mr. Oliver urges us to learn about our foods so that we can make better decisions with our bodies.</div>

In 1970, an annual event known as Earth Day became a national and later an international day of recognition of environmental issues for our planet. Held every April 22nd, it is obviously, a wonderful idea to bring awareness to the colossal issues that Mother Earth</div>
<a name='more'></a>faces. What is astonishing to me, however, is that we give only one day a year towards being mindful about this big blue marble we all live on. <br />

In the book <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tenth_Insight:_Holding_the_Vision" style="font-weight: bold;">The Tenth Insight</a>, James Redfield presents a fictional follow-up tale to his bestselling book The Celestine Prophecy. In it he discusses how historically the Europeans were meant to come to the Americas to learn from the indigenous peoples on how to honor Mother Nature by giving it the Spiritual context it deserves. That may have been how it all started, but then fear took over and manifest destiny was born. It was clear to me when I read this story, that though told in a fictional way, this was absolutely a message given to all of us from the Universe. We have been taught to take, take, take and this ideology is no longer sustainable.</div>

With this week's revelation by NASA that <a href="http://www.collective-evolution.com/2014/04/18/nasa-admits-to-chemtrails-as-they-propose-spraying-stratospheric-aerosols-into-earths-atmosphere/" style="font-weight: bold;">chem-trails are indeed a reality</a>, not to mention the damage multiple corporations are causing for our Home, it is no wonder that the natural beauty that was once prolific on our planetary milieu is ever-increasingly diminishing. For example, earlier this month, it was announced that the <a href="http://www.kansascity.com/2014/04/09/4948787/californias-san-joaquin-river.html"><b>San Joaquin River</b></a> in California is the most endangered river source in America. Over sixty miles of fresh water is in jeopardy. It's not just the water that is affected. This is the place where salmon are supposed to spawn. Without the water, they cannot do so. Furthermore, the land of over <a href="http://archive.kare11.com/news/article/956256/14/More-MN-lakes-and-rivers-named-as-endangered"><b>10,000 lakes</b></a>, Minnesota, now has 3,600 lake and river sources that are at risk. These are just two examples of the pervasive water depletion that is taking place around the world. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have a symbiotic relationship with water. Indeed, we are over 70% water ourselves. We not only need it to replenish us, the plants and other animals require it, as well. Considering we consume plants and animals, it is imperative that we get this situation under control.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">One of the most informative, if not heart-breaking, documentaries I have seen on this subject is called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqxENMKaeCU" style="font-weight: bold; text-align: start;">HOME</a>. Narrated by Glenn Close, this spectacle will undoubtedly raise the level of awareness to all who watch it. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">That being said, in celebration of Earth Day, I have listed below various images taken from our Home. It seems to me that these places behind the photos are all worth saving</span>—and this saving starts with YOU, ME and everyone else<span style="text-align: start;">. This cannot be shoved off onto the other guy, nor can we wait for some undetermined date in the future. Each individual <i>does</i> make a difference.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: start;">So, plant sustainable vegetation, eat organically and locally, don't give stock support to companies like Monsanto. It is time to replenish all the goodness that is a part of our natural existence</span>—before it's too late. Earth Day is not just about one day, it is about a way of living.</div>

There is little doubt that our food situation is in crisis. However, one town in England has decided to actually do something about it. They have thrown out the idea of the perfectly coiffed genetically modified lawn and replaced it with edible vegetation strategically placed<br />
<a name='more'></a>in the most unlikely of places. From parking lots to local hospitals, police stations and schools, volunteers are planting new gardens of Eden. Furthermore, the public, no matter what demographic they belong to, can feast on the delights—all for free! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If one person can make a difference, just think what one town can do. Todmorden can be our collective teacher—and it is. Cities across the globe are watching this model and creating their own edible landscapes too. Hoorah! </div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Food
for everyone!</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Who wouldn’t want
that?</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Certainly, the companies that sell
genetically modified foods and pesticides have gotten away with the enormous amount
of damage they have caused on our planet by claiming that very thing. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">They have said it</span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> and we have believed them,
which just goes to show you how the proverbial dollar has forged this idea of practical
sainthood of the corporations into our minds.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">We see images of the ubiquitous corn fields and have been taught to look
at them as our savior. The reality is that the bulk of that corn is used in contradiction to nature. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzg9bDwA71nXbbEvxBlXKOvZayK4K8F-4RVV4dr4MGU9NwqAnf4ibFpqaymfg07ucxj8pNrIUJ8pYvr0IF57Of_vzbc853PI4qsApv-vALLLA5AMCxbu8Xekj0_rbn8oskyPm-oHQc6A0/s1600/corn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzg9bDwA71nXbbEvxBlXKOvZayK4K8F-4RVV4dr4MGU9NwqAnf4ibFpqaymfg07ucxj8pNrIUJ8pYvr0IF57Of_vzbc853PI4qsApv-vALLLA5AMCxbu8Xekj0_rbn8oskyPm-oHQc6A0/s1600/corn.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Firstly, it is made into addicting sugar
products that are hidden in virtually everything that is processed, including
in all the so-called natural items. Its other primary purpose is used to feed cattle. That would be great if corn was part of the cow's normal diet, but it is not and it is not good for them.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Moreover, the corporations have touched upon our weak spot by convincing us that GM foods are better because it is cheaper. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Unfortunately, w</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">hile the GM food prices might be more palatable for our pocketbooks, </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">all of this is nothing more
than a marketing scheme so that these companies can continue earning
unprecedented amounts of money at not only our individual body’s expense, but
the entire world’s expense, as well. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">One
of the largest culprits in the mass destruction of Mother Earth is Monsanto,
but if you go to their website you might think they were the answer to all of
our prayers. Their logo displays an
artistic rendition of a plant. Their home
page has beautiful images depicting fields of mono-agriculture stating their ‘vision’.
In one picture we see two farmers
talking together about a head of lettuce.
The words written across it say, <i>“We’re
helping farmers bring more appealing produce to your plate.” </i>It’s pretty audacious to think one can
improve upon Mother Nature. Furthermore,
these photos placed together make it seem as though they are on <i>our</i> side</span>—<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">as though they want to help us. If that were the case, why do they utilize
scare tactics in making certain that local farmers can no longer use their own
seed? The answer is that they want to
have the corner on biology so that they are able to earn every single penny that they
can. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Regrettably,
the ramifications behind technological farming is simply causing us to quickly lose the ability to maintain our food and
water supply. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">What's more, Monsanto is only a part of the problem. Dow, Bayer, Syngenta, DuPont and BASF are also contributing to this cataclysm. However, if you were to visit each of their respective sites, you would once again see the advertising dollar hard at work. The first four display lovely over-sized pictures of nature conveying this idea that they are helping with our food problem. BASF, on the other hand, takes a slightly different approach. Its homepage shows how they have helped to revolutionize the Nike shoe. Apparently, their chemistry is helping to form a "sustainable future." Despite these sales tactics, photos can be deceiving. At what cost is science altering our natural environment?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">For one thing mono-cropping depletes the dirt of its nutrients, which in turn depletes the nutrients in the plant-life. Vegetation is the food source for many animals (including us), which means a domino effect of malnutrition is being engineered for the entire world's population of plants and animals. Even more disturbing is the rate at which the impending demise of all of our food products is taking place. The film, </span><i style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><b><a href="http://www.thefutureoffood.com/">The Future of Food</a></b>, </i><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">states that 97% of
the crops from the early twentieth century are now extinct because of modern
farming practices. That’s </span><b style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><i>ninety-seven percent! </i></b><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Needless to say,
that is an alarming amount.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Moreover,
this documentary shows how GM companies are selling their products to the populace by claiming
that they can prevent food insecurity by feeding the world with their crops. Yet, the unfortunate reality of why people are starving in the third</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> world nations is actually being <i>caused</i> by these companies interference. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">The reason for this is due to the fact that many third world nations borrowed large sums of money from first world nations</span>—<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">money that they could not pay back. A resolution was contrived in order to make ends meet. Technological corporate farming was introduced to these nations too, making it easier on the governments to pay off their loans. One of the many problems with this is that the governments who once subsidized the individual farmer no longer had the means to do so, which simply means that the small farmer can no longer provide food for him and his family. Consequently, this lack of subsidization has led to the starvation of the masses and the exodus of copious amounts of people into the cities. In other words, </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><b>GM foods are
<i>causing</i> food deprivation</b>, not just because they are ruining our land and our climate, but because they are chasing small farmers from their livelihood.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">The
good news is that there are those out there who are not only re-shaping the way we think about food, they are also creating sustainable resources for feeding the population. For one, there is <b><a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/stephen_ritz_a_teacher_growing_green_in_the_south_bronx#t-633594">Stephen Ritz</a> </b>who is a teacher in the South Bronx. One might wonder what a teacher can do to make a difference in feeding the world. I mean this guy isn't even a farmer. However, he certainly has the alacrity to help "his kids" get healthy, happy and whole. By creating over one hundred wall-gardens in schools and larger gardens out in the community, he and his students are indeed making a difference. In his words, 'the poorest congressional district in America, the South Bronx,' now feeds scrumptious organic foods to hundreds of people 'without taking food stamps or needing a fingerprint.' </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">His kids are licensed and have planted lush gardens all over New York and in other states, as well. Furthermore, these young people who were once considered the most likely <i>not</i> to succeed are now engaged. They are not only staying in school, they are graduating and even attending college. Knowledge is power, while the food they are consuming is helping to create thinking, healthy minds that crave this knowledge. That is certainly a good thing.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">On the other side of the country, </span><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"><b><a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/ron_finley_a_guerilla_gardener_in_south_central_la">Ron Finley</a></b></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; text-align: justify;">, aka the </span><span style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Guerrilla</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; text-align: justify;"> Gardner, is taking action in South Central Los Angeles. Sadly, South Central is a food desert, which means the primary food source comes from fast-food and liquor stores. While Beverly Hills may only be a few miles away, lack of nutrition in this part of the city has led to obesity, wheelchairs and a lopsided percentage of unhealthy occupants</span>—<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">primarily caused by the lack of wholesome organic foods</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">. In his talk on TedTV, Finley discusses how food is the problem <i>and</i> the solution</span>—<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">and he right</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">. Our bodies respond in kind to the type of energy that is placed into it. Feed it a bright orange healthy carrot and it will feel good. Feed it a greasy burger from McDonald's and the body goes into rejection mode. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Finley had grown weary of having to travel forty-five minutes to buy an organic apple, so he stepped up to the plate and planted a garden in front of his home</span>—<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">and that was only the beginning</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">. Thanks to his dedication, at least twenty more gardens have burgeoned around town in order to help others in need. Don't get me wrong, the food he helps to grow is not free. Volunteers may be in charge of its creation, but the people consuming it, must work the land and sell the output at local farmer's markets so that more gardens can be created. Needless to say, it is a win-win for everyone.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">One of my favorite quotes comes from Mr. Finley. He says, <i>"If kids grow kale, they eat kale."</i> For decades, we have been brainwashed to believe that our technologically made food is good for us. So, we become adults who eat the garbage that we have been brought up to believe is healthy. However, if we educate our children on the importance of eating properly and maintaining a sustainable Earth, they will grow up with the understanding of how every aspect in nature affects one another. Our children are the key to shifting the threat of mass food extinction that we are in the midst of facing if we don't all make the necessary changes that are needed. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">A food revolution is upon us. The only difference is that instead of weapons, this revolution will be fought with organic vegetation.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">Springtime is a metaphor for rebirth.</span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">It represents the newness within us.</span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">It is when we plant the seeds of our future,
both literally and symbolically.</span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">Keeping
that in mind, I celebrated this week’s Spring Equinox by meandering around in
my garden.</span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">I practiced a walking
meditation, allowing the bottoms of my feet to feel</span></div>
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">every nuance of the ground beneath me. Connecting with Mother Earth
in this way always brings me into the present moment.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVGXAGc3LT8bn0Bs7lrFOnsGBJjK3DzR4v3mm9LqEqmhao72vED5HTOmrYf6lP81r49rK8AwvcJp2o__kdwm0UIhd5QW4_U24it8faSX5EGRRmRukvzf4363t-KoxbKwcWN1tYwc0UOM4/s1600/pink+roses+and+hydrangeas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVGXAGc3LT8bn0Bs7lrFOnsGBJjK3DzR4v3mm9LqEqmhao72vED5HTOmrYf6lP81r49rK8AwvcJp2o__kdwm0UIhd5QW4_U24it8faSX5EGRRmRukvzf4363t-KoxbKwcWN1tYwc0UOM4/s1600/pink+roses+and+hydrangeas.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">It was in this present moment when I felt compelled
to clear out the three lifeless branches from my rose bush, enabling me to see
the fullness of the remaining plant. Considering
our winter in Arizona has been quite warm this past season, the vibrant green
leaves of the plant’s offshoots had already begun flourishing. I looked forward to receiving the red
blossoms that this shrub produces every year.
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">Furthermore, as I removed the old branches, I also
discovered that a younger rose plant had sprung adjacent to its parent. As I released the old that was no longer
serving me, I could then visibly see the glorious new Being that was taking its
place. It would stand to reason that I
will have even more roses than usual—which certainly brings a smile to my face
and to my heart.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif";">I
next moved on to the opposite side of my yard where an oversized pot
rests. Winter had ravaged the once thriving resident
from last year and it was necessary to clear out the old in order to make way
for a new plant to take its place. I
arrived with the intention of having to do some pretty serious digging. That is when I beheld for the first time that
underneath all the crunchy hard leaves, a nursery was brewing. A burgeoning mint plant that had clearly been
propagated from its parent was awaiting for me to take care of it. I had no idea it was even there, but luckily
when left to its own devices, Mother Nature knows exactly what to do. Her resilience astounds this particular
observer.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif";">That
being said, it is important to note that while Mother Nature does know what to
do when we don’t fool around with it, it is another matter when we
intentionally send harmful chemicals into its bosom and when we attempt to
genetically modify its perfection. I,
myself, have learned a plethora of truths behind how we treat our natural
environment. Every single act has its
various set of consequences.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif";">Take,
for example, the copious amounts of hummingbird feeders that are seemingly
everywhere. We set them up to entice
these lovely birds into our gardens. That
is because between the hummingbird’s vibrant coloring along with the fact that
they are kept afloat by the flapping of their rapidly moving wings, we can’t
help but be in awe of these tiny creatures. It’s as though they inspire joy within us,
simply by being in our presence. It’s no
wonder so many get in on the act of having a hummingbird feeder or two. We just can’t get enough of them. It’s not the feeders themselves that are the
problem, it’s what we put in them that is.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">In our bowls, we pour boiling water over piles of
processed sugar in order to melt the crystals.
After cooling the concoction we then lovingly place the mixture in our
feeder. Why shouldn’t we use this easy
recipe to bring in the birds? They
clearly enjoy it—and so do we!
Unfortunately, this way of thinking is analogous to giving an alcoholic
a glass of wine. Sure, they want
it. They even congregate around it. However, is it really good for them? Or is it yet another marketing scheme various
companies have made in order to get you to buy their product. Alas, I fear, it is indeed the latter.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">Admittedly, I too fell prey to these seemingly
wonderful devices only to Awaken to the realization that if sugar is addicting
to me (read <i><b><a href="http://organic-bliss.blogspot.com/2013/06/addicted-to-sugar.html">Addicted to Sugar</a></b></i></span><span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif";">) then
certainly it is addicting for other life forms, as well.
Moreover, processed sugar acts as a poison to all of our systems. In fact, part of the reason the bees are disappearing
is because large commercial beekeepers are by in large feeding them processed sugar, which is driving them mad (read <b><i><a href="http://organic-bliss.blogspot.com/2013/05/to-bee-or-not-to-bee.html">To Bee or Not to Bee</a></i></b>). It would stand to reason that if
processed sugar has debilitating effects on humans and on bees it would do the
same on the rest of our wildlife. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">According to </span><b style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;"><i><a href="http://www.hummingbirdsociety.org/index-inside.php?Endangered-4">The Hummingbird Society</a></i></b><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">, 34 of the 338 species of hummingbirds are facing extinction. While it is certainly not just one thing that is endangering all aspects of our natural environment, it is true that every act creates a rippling effect of repercussions. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif";"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">The natural food source of the hummingbird are
various insects and spiders along with the drinking of the nectars that come
from flowers. A factory does not need to
get involved in creating the synthesized sugars, for the good stuff already
exists in nature. The key here is to plant
flowers that are indigenous to a particular area that a hummingbird will enjoy
rather than feeding them something that is hurting them.</span><span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">Another thing that exemplifies our problematic yards is the interminable usage of lawns.</span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">I am not talking about wild grass that grows naturally throughout
nature.</span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;"> During this time of year, </span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">I have some wild grasses
that bloom lovely indigo-colored flowers that the bees and butterflies
adore.</span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">That is an avenue of feeding these
beautiful creatures.</span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow', sans-serif;">However, having a
lawn is not.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

are doing to our planet, I distinctly remember being three years old and
looking at the sea of never ending perfectly coiffed green patches in
front of everyone’s homes and thought that they were somehow wrong. I didn’t comprehend why
at the time, but now I do.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

of water—water that we can hardly afford to waste. My wild grasses never receive a single bit of

the rains that Father Sky provides and that is all. </span></div>

roses. So many of us have lost our way
when it comes to connecting with Nature.
If we all realized that we are animals too and as such we are the brothers and sisters to all the Beings on our planet, we would then remember that we play an
intrinsic role in the dance with Nature. If we each
take the time to get in touch with our primordial connection with the land, the
air, the water, and with all the Beings who live here, we would have a happier and cleaner Home to live in. Hence, a harmonious and more
fruitful existence would be had by us all.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
